Dr Ostrosky-Zeichner is currently a professor of medicine and epidemiology, the Vice-Chair of Medicine for Healthcare Quality, and the director of the Laboratory of Mycology Research at the Division of Infectious Diseases of the McGovern Medical School (a part of UTHealth). He also serves as the associate fellowship program director and medical director for epidemiology and antimicrobial stewardship for Memorial Hermann Texas Medical Center. He is a fellow of the American College of Physicians, the Infectious Diseases Society of America, and the Society of Healthcare Epidemiology of America. He is a senior editor for the Journal of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy as well as an editorial board member for Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy and Critical Care Medicine. He is a board member of the Mycoses Study Group and Educational Consortium and the International Immunocompromised Host Society, He is also the immediate past chair of the Infectious Diseases Society of America Standards and Practice Guidelines Committee and a consultant to the US FDA and CDC.
Dr Ostrosky-Zeichner obtained his medical degree from Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico. He completed his internal medicine residency at Instituto Nacional de Ciencias Medicas y Nutricion Salvador Zubiran, and his infectious diseases fellowship at the University of Texas Medical School at Houston and MD Anderson Cancer Center combined fellowship program. He has advanced training and experience in antifungal susceptibility testing, fungal serologies, PK/PD of antifungals, in vivo models of human mycoses, immunology, and clinical trials in prophylaxis and treatment of fungal infections, as well as hospital epidemiology and infection control. He has published over 125 peer-reviewed articles and actively pursues translational research as well as clinical interests in medical mycology, transplant infectious diseases, healthcare epidemiology, antimicrobial stewardship, and healthcare quality.
Melissa D. Johnson, PharmD, MHS, AAHIVP, is a Liaison Clinical Pharmacist for Duke Antimicrobial Stewardship Outreach Network (DASON) and Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases & International Health at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina. Dr Johnson received a B.S. in Biochemistry from University of Georgia, a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from Campbell University, and a Masters in Health Science in the Clinical Research Training Program from Duke University School of Medicine. Following a fellowship in Infectious Diseases Pharmacotherapy at Duke University Medical Center, she joined the faculty in the Division of Infectious Diseases & International Health. Dr Johnson has served as investigator for numerous clinical trials with antifungal, antiretroviral, and antibacterial agents. Her clinical research interests include invasive fungal infections in immunocompromised hosts with a special focus on immunogenetics, pharmacogenetics, and pharmacodynamics. She was the recipient of a 5-year NIH/NIAID Mentored Career Award to pursue patient-oriented research in invasive candidiasis and was co-investigator on an NIH program grant to investigate microfluidic methods of detection for infectious pathogens, including Candida spp. She has been a member of the Duke Antimicrobial Stewardship Evaluation Team since 1997. In 2015, Dr Johnson joined the Duke Antimicrobial Stewardship Outreach Network (DASON) to expand involvement in stewardship efforts as a Liaison Clinical Pharmacist in community hospitals in the southeastern United States. Dr Johnson serves as a scientific reviewer for numerous journals and has been an invited international and national speaker on topics such as antibiotic resistance, HIV, invasive fungal infections, and management of bacterial infections. She is an active member of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy, American Society of Microbiology, Society of Healthcare Epidemiology of America, and the Society of Infectious Disease Pharmacists.
Jose A. Vazquez, MD, FACP, FIDSA, is Chief, Division of Infectious Diseases and Professor of Medicine at the Medical College of Georgia/Augusta University, Augusta, GA. Prior to this, he was Professor of Medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases at Wayne State University School of Medicine and Senior Staff Physician in the Department of Medicine, Division of Infectious Diseases, at Henry Ford Hospital and Medical System in Detroit, Michigan. He is also currently the Chair of the Antimicrobial Stewardship Program at Augusta University Health and Chair of the Bio-Medical Institutional Review Board at Augusta University.
Dr Vazquez earned his medical degree from Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra in Santiago, Dominican Republic. He completed his residency in internal medicine at Finch University of Health Sciences/Chicago Medical School in North Chicago, Illinois. Dr Vazquez completed a 3-year infectious diseases fellowship at Wayne State University School of Medicine and is board certified in internal medicine and infectious diseases.
Dr Vazquez’s research interests include the epidemiology and management of mucosal and invasive candidiasis, as well as the management of systemic fungal infections and the characterization of polymicrobial biofilms, especially Candida/Staphylococcus and Aspergillus/Pseudomonas.
His clinical research interest includes cutaneous and invasive yeast and mold infections, endocarditis, acute and chronic osteomyelitis, chronic wounds, antimicrobial stewardship programs, and infections due to MRSA or multi-drug resistant infections.
